Safety & Hearing Tips for Halloween

Are you taking your grandchildren out Trick or Treating? How can your ability to hear affect the safety of your festivities? Have you considered how face masks hamper clear communication?

It’s important to consider how Halloween festivites affect someone with hearing loss, so everyone can enjoy the fun, fellowship, and friendship.

Things to consider when communicating during Halloween:

1. Masks limit visual clues. Peolple with and without hearing loss use these clues to understand speech that may be missed due to noise and chaos during Trick or Treating. Choosing a costume mask that allows your mouth to be visible is beneficial.

2. Trick or Treating during darkness makes visual and hearing senses diminished. Make sure to wear light colors or reflective tape on constumes. Carrying a flashlight will help with visual and allow people to see your face when talking.

3. If your Trick or Treater wears hearing devices be extra careful they recognize slow moving vehicles. They are harder to hear when moving at a slow speed.

4. If you or a loved one wears hearing instruments make sure to check the functionality and have fresh batteries in for your festivities! Losing sound can leave you isolated from the fun!

5. While attending Halloween parties practice good hearing conservation by staying away from loud speakers or any source of loud sounds.

Never feel ashamed or hide from hearing difficulties. Be honest with your family and friends, they will help you out and keep you safe while enjoying Halloween!
