How to Protect Your Hearing Aids from Moisture

If you use hearing aids, then you know how important it is to protect them from moisture. Even though most rechargeable hearing aids are IP68 rated, moisture from sweat or humidity in the air can cause them to deteriorate. If your hearing aids deteriorate you will need to repair or replace them. While there have been strides in the technology of hearing aids in recent years to improve their resistance to water, they can still be subject to moisture and water issues.

Why is it Important to Keep Your Hearing Aids Dry?

There are many benefits to keeping your hearing aids dry and free of moisture. Most importantly, they will work more efficiently if they are kept dry and better hearing is the name of the game. Moisture can negatively affect the sound quality of hearing aids, reducing the decibels in the volume and essentially defeating the purpose of even having hearing aids. If you keep them dry, you won’t need to repair them, replace them as frequently, or struggle with them not working properly.

At Better Hearing Solutions, we offer sound hearing solutions and want to help make your hearing aids last longer. Here are some helpful tips for protecting your hearing aids from moisture.

Aside from your hearing aids working better, it is going to make your hearing aids last longer. With less deterioration from moisture they are going to inevitably function for a longer duration. This will save you money over time because you won’t need to replace them as often and will be getting the most for your money. Do you have other questions about hearing aids? What are some Different Ways that Hearing Aids get Wet?

Moisture can creep into your hearing aids from something as simple as cold air, which causes condensation to form on your hearing aids. Humidity in the air is another big factor in hearing aids getting moisture without you even realizing it, whether it happens outside or even in the comforts of your home. Sweat is another leading factor in moisture on hearing aids. The level that you perspire can vary from other people, but any amount of perspiration can cause your hearing aids to present with moisture problems.

Rain is another key factor in hearing aids getting wet. Even a misting or light drizzle can affect your hearing aids, so during heavy rainstorms you should protect your hearing aids when outside. Longer hair, wider hats, and ear muffs can all add a layer of protection for your hearing aids, but none of those are going to keep your eyes completely dry in the rain. You also have the option to use Ear Gear to guard against moisture while wearing your hearing aids, these are available in our office.

How Can You Tell if Your Hearing Aids have Water Damage?

If your hearing aids have been damaged by moisture, they might simply stop working, particularly if they were completely soaked from being submerged in water. However, if it is just due to more subtle moisture you may experience them intermittently working and then not working, which is also a sign that they might be need to be cleaned and serviced for moisture removal in the office.

What you experience might be a bit more subtle than that, however. You might just hear static feedback or distorted sounds, you could hear a crackling, or even experience the volume not working as it should. Any of these signs could mean it’s time for service. We offer repairs for all makes and models of hearing aids.

So Your Hearing Aids act like they have Moisture Problems, Now What?

If you do experience any of the above signs of moisture or water damage, you should first try and dry them out. If you remove the batteries and dry the hearing aid with a towel gently, and leave them open to dry out overnight, you might be able to remove the moisture. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, bring them into the office to be ran in the ReDux commercial dryer.

There are also different types of hearing aid dryers for home use with your device. Moisture removal at home or in the office will save you money and frustration of a manufacturer repair.
